Clinical Laboratory Techniques

Introduces the student to the basics of clinical laboratory techniques. The student will develop foundational knowledge in the preparation, handling and submission of appropriate samples for diagnostic analysis, learn about the proper maintenance, quality control and safety procedures required in a laboratory sett and the steps involve in evaluating blood, urine, fecal and cytological samples. Prerequisites: VET 201 with a grade of “C” or higher. Corequisites: VET 202, VET LB4, VET 245, VET LB5, VET 246, VET LB6 and VET 280.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss the procedure and the equipment to be used for routine laboratory analysis which may include urinalysis, complete blood counts with microscopic evaluation of a blood smear, blood chemistry analysis, serologic tests, or coagulation tests.
2. Describe the procedure for cross matching blood and the consequences of a transfusion mismatch.
3. Discuss appropriate quality control measures.
4. Discuss measures to ensure safety of patients, clients and staff.
5. Discuss protocols for safe handling of rabies suspects and corresponding samples for testing.
6. Explain the function of red blood cells including normal and abnormal morphology, and the significance of the abnormalities in the disease process.
7. Explain the function of white blood cells including normal and abnormal morphology, and the significance of the abnormalities in the disease process.
8. Explain the function of platelets and coagulation factors and the role of each in the coagulation process.
9. Explain the process involved in the evaluation of a urine sample and its significance in a variety of disease processes.
10. Describe characteristics of malignancy that might be found in cytologic preparations.
