Introduction to Meteorology

An introduction to scientific inquiry of how the atmosphere and weather behave. It examines atmospheric parameters (temperatures, humidity, pressure, winds); the formation of clouds, rain and snow; middle-latitude cyclones and hurricanes; and the development of thunderstorms, lightning, hail and tornadoes. Basic weather forecasting, climate change, air pollution, and optical phenomena are also examined. Includes a laboratory component where students learn to analyze meteorological concepts, data, and maps. Two class hours, two lab hours. Prerequisite: Completion of the Genesee Community College math proficiency.

Subject Code: MET

Course Number: 101

Credits: 3

Lecture Hours 2

Lab Hours: 2

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Apply the methods scientists use, including observation, prediction, and experimentation in the field of meteorology.
2. Describe the layers of the atmosphere, both in chemical composition and temperature distribution.
3. Define various terms common to Meteorology (temperature, pressure, humidity, etc.)
4. Identify different types of instruments used by scientists in meteorology.
5. Identify the various types of precipitation and describe their causes.
6. Describe the process of cloud formation, and the resulting cloud types.
7. Analyze data appropriate to the field of meteorology.
8. Describe the earth’s heat balance through various means (convection, conduction, radiation, absorption, scattering, etc.).
9. Describe seasonal variations at different locations with their causes.
10. Describe the general circulation patterns of the earth, on both a large and small scale.
11. Identify the jet stream and describe its effect on U.S. weather patterns.
12. List the air masses that effect the continental U.S.
13. Illustrate the effect of cyclogenesis and pressure systems on fronts and our weather system.
14. Identify and describe the conditions necessary for severe weather development.
15. Predict local weather using available tools.
