General Chemistry 1 Lab
CHE 103L is the application of the didactic instruction for CHE 103 and a required corequisite. Skills and performance in CHE 103L are assessed as a component of CHE 103 and therefore must be successfully completed in addition to all the requirements for CHE 103. CHE 103L supports concepts from the lecture (atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, solutions, gases, and thermochemistry) and covers basic lab skills, capturing information in a lab notebook, determining conclusions from experimental results and designing next experiments based upon previous results. Corequisites: CHE 103. Prerequisites: CHE 100 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher or Regents Chemistry with a Regents exam score 75 or higher or MAT 102 or higher. The math requirements may be taken concurrently with CHE 103. (Note: MAT 108 MAT 129, MAT 116 and MAT 117 are not accepted as math prerequisites.) Three lab hours.
Subject Code: CHE
Course Number: 103L
Credits: 1
Lab Hours: 3
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Explore natural phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation in the chemistry.
2. Determine ion charges based upon electron configuration and the chemical formula for ionic compounds.
3. Apply molecular modeling (Lewis (electron) Dot Structures, 3D molecular models and images to assess polarity, and molecule shape.
4. Apply the mole concept to chemical systems and reaction for using balanced chemical equations (net ionic) for solids, liquids, aqueous solutions and gases.
5. Make solutions of specific molarity, starting with a solid and by diluting an existing solution.
6. Apply ideal gas laws to chemical experimentation.
7. Apply enthalpy data to simulated thermochemical systems.
Effective Term: Fall 2023
