General Chemistry 1

Introduces the fundamental principles of chemistry including: atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, solutions, gases and thermochemistry. Recommended for students pursuing careers in science, engineering, health and/or technology fields. A solid math/algebra background is expected. Three class hours. Corequisites: CHE 103L Prerequisites: CHE 100 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher or Regents Chemistry with a Regents exam score 75 or higher or MAT 102 or higher. The math requirements may be taken concurrently with CHE 103. (Note: MAT 108 MAT 129, MAT 116 and MAT 117 are not accepted as math prerequisites.)

Subject Code: CHE

Course Number: 103

Credits: 3

Lecture Hours 3

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Apply Atomic Theory to elements using subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and electrons) to atoms, ions, isotopes and element reactivity.
2. Relate ionization energy data to the electron shell concept and electron transitions to emission/absorption spectra.
3. Relate the four quantum numbers to position and energy of electrons, based on orbital diagrams and electron configurations.
4. Determine ion charges based upon electron configuration and the chemical formula for ionic compounds.
5. Apply molecular modeling (Lewis (electron) Dot Structures, 3D molecular models and images to assess polarity, and molecule shape.
6. Apply the mole concept to chemical systems and reaction for using balanced chemical equations (net ionic) for solids, liquids, aqueous solutions and gases.
7. Make solutions of specific molarity, starting with a solid and by diluting an existing solution.
8. Apply the Gas Laws (Ideal and Combined) to chemical systems in gas phase.
9. Evaluate thermochemical systems using enthalpy data.
