Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP)
What is CSTEP?
The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is a New York State grant funded initiative and sponsored by SUNY Genesee Community College (GCC). The program is designed to support under-represented and/or economically disadvantaged, matriculated students interested in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers or those requiring pre – licensure.
CSTEP offers an array of academic opportunities and professional preparedness skills to succeed in achieving their scholastic and professional goals.
The program is represented in various CUNY, SUNY, and private institutions across the State of New York.
CSTEP, established in 1986, is a joint project with the New York Department of Education.

Provide an environment where students acquire academic and lifelong skills to become outstanding scholars and professionals.
Student Eligibility
- Matriculated New York state resident
- African-American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan native
OR
- Economically disadvantaged

What we offer
At Genesee Community College, CSTEP supports students in and array of disciplines inclusive of accounting, computer programs, human services, nursing, PTA, and MORE! The program fosters a cooperative learning environment with support services that enhance each student’s academic growth and professional potential.
The following describes services available to CSTEP students
- Counseling/Advising
CSTEP staff will assist you with career, personal, and academic advising. - Tutoring
CSTEP offers group or individual tutoring. - Peer support groups
CSTEP encourages peer support/study groups, mentoring, networking, career exploration, educational and socialization activities. - Enrichment activities
CSTEP sponsors workshops, job shadowing, internships, field trips, and seminars. Attendance at professional conferences, field trips, or guest speakers is encouraged to increase knowledge about potential careers. - Preparation for licensure and/or transition programs at four-year institutions
CSTEP staff will assist students in developing plans to improve performance on licensure examinations as well as assist students with the next step applications. - References
CSTEP staff will provide employment, scholarship or educational references for students who have been active participants in the CSTEP program.
Impact and Accomplishments:
CSTEP Results:
- Over 70% of CSTEP students matriculate in STEM and health related fields
- On average, more than 15% of CSTEP graduates enter licensed professions each year
- Over 5,500 underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students participate annually in CSTEP
- CSTEP seniors graduate at a higher rate than non-CSTEP peers
- CSTEP graduates pursue graduate programs & licensure at a higher rate than their non-CSTEP peers.
